–Parallel Verses:
I John‬ ‭5‬:‭5‬-‭8‬
Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.

‭‭When I think about the last portion of this genealogy, what is Luke trying to communicate? Why does he insert this genealogy after Jesus’ baptism, instead of at his birth, like the other gospels?

I think the secret here is to look at the points he is trying to make, and it will show the origin of why he places this genealogy here. So what are the points? This second part of the genealogy has some important points just like the first part did. First, Jesus was from a lineage of God’s people, the Jews. Second, he is from a royal lineage of King David, as we said yesterday. Third, he is from the lineage of the beginnings of man, Adam. And it is this fourth point that stood out to me today: he is from the direct lineage of God, before the creation of the world. It says: “the son of Adam, the son of God.” Jesus was both from the direct lineage of Adam in his human form, and from the direct lineage of God too, because he is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He was at creation with God and will be at the end times of this earth with God, as well.

In the parallel verses, John talks about how Jesus is the one who came “by water” and “by blood”. The Holy Spirit was on Jesus at birth. The Spirit came in bodily form on Jesus at his baptism as a sign, as he came into his ministry by water. And the Spirit of God stayed on him throughout his ministry to the cross, where his precious blood was spilt. There were apparently Agnostics at the time that held that Jesus was not God until after the Spirit descended on him as a dove. They also held that before he went to the cross he also stopped being God. They used human reason to concoct these positions. But John refutes this in I John here. He was the Christ, God’s Son all the time he was here. And Luke affirms this in his genealogy. Jesus was both of Adam and of God. He was both human and God.

Why does this matter to me today? Because I serve Jesus, as a Lord and Savior. He is the one who can both empathize with me and rule over my circumstances! He is both my Brother and my Lord, my Savior and my Friend.

Lord, thank you that you came to earth. That you are both God and man. That you did this for me and so many others throughout time! Praise your name!
