Do You Crave the Power or the Power Source?‭‭ - Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭17‬-‭21

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.”

In the epic battles of Spider-Man, one villain named Electro created a monopoly on power. He built strength and size by taking the power from the power sources around him. As the power flows into him, he uses it to build up himself and his power. He then goes around causing havoc, destroying things, and trying to dominate people.

As I think about this passage, Jesus had given the 72 disciples incredible power to heal, cast out spirits, and preach the gospel. But he had a purpose for this power. The purpose was to spread the gospel. And as the 72 return here from casting out spirits and healing others, they focus on the power they had over the evil spirits. And Jesus cautions them that this “obsession”, left unchecked, can be dangerous just like Electro’s obsession with power in the adventures of Spider-Man. Instead, he redirects them to focus on their salvation, their destination, and their identity in Jesus Christ.

And he praises God: that he revealed the deep truth of his wisdom to those who in this world are thought of as children — the unlearned and common folks. It is God’s pleasure to use us weak humans for his incredible glory. Don’t crave the power, crave a relationship and a focus on the work of the source of the power — Jesus Christ!

Lord, thank you for this passage that reminds me that when you give me supernatural power or gifts, they are not to build up my ego but to enrich those around me and build their faith. Keep me focused on you, Lord Jesus!
