I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.
I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.
I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

–Parallel verses:
‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭5‬
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7‬:‭24‬-‭25‬
[Jesus speaking]
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

My wife and I recently visited a gemology store in a local mall, and we were mesmerized by all of the unique and rare gems and polished rock they carried. Some of these pieces were many thousands of dollars to purchase. These rocks are showpieces and are meant to be set out front to enjoy — they are impressive and create good conversation pieces.

There is another type of rock that people can build houses upon. Granite is a tough rock that can make a great foundation, but it is a lot of work to blast out and set up just right. Then you must use quality materials to build for a structure to last for a long time.

This passage in Psalms states that God’s Word is as important to follow after as one would great riches. I have seen time and again that those who pursue wealth above all else typically end up living unfulfilled lives, full of emptiness and broken relationships along the way! So instead, we should pursue God’s laws, his decrees, and his Word.

It also says we are to meditate on his precepts and consider his ways. This is not just an intellectual exercise. This is an active, in-the-middle-of-the-battle-type of consideration.

Questions like: How will I respond to adversity? What will I do with the sinful temptation in my heart? Who will call the shots and be the boss of my life, me or God?

And then it says we are to rejoice in his Word. This is a choice we make. We choose to be thankful and joyful about the truth, restrictions, and guidance we find there. Why? Because we trust that God is a far greater life-coach than any mere man!

The John 1 passage tells us that Jesus is the active Word of God, he is God in the flesh and the Word of God in perfect thought and action. His heart speaks what God’s heart speaks.

So pulling this all together: I will pursue, meditate on, and rejoice in the Word of God, which is personified in Jesus. He is the reason God predestined me to live, the source of all that is truly good in my life. He is the power and the strength I build with, THE ROCK I BUILD ON!

Lord, thank you for your Word that lives and moves in my heart. It moves me to love and serve like Jesus did. It shaped me into a useful vessel in your hands. Your Word is my treasure and my delight!
