In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

–Parallel verses:
‭‭II Corinthians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

Before God created the earth, darkness reigned. We know Satan and the fallen angels were cast down from heaven and ironically Satan, in the form of a serpent, tempted Eve to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, against God’s command. So I find it logical to assume that at the very beginning, when darkness reigned, Satan and his fallen angels were also reigning.

And God started his creation (the opposite of destruction, the currency the evil one deals in) by creating light.

Why?
Light is essential to life! It brings about so much – growth, vitamins, visibility, warmth, fruit, direction, etc.
And while it was so essential in the beginning, man messed up and cast the light of their eyes aside by sinning against God.

So God sent his son to save us. And in saving us, he also became the light of men. “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭4‬-‭5‬)

Jesus gave life to a dark world, and through his blood offering and resurrection, he gave his light to be the light of our hearts.

We understand, as enlightened followers of Jesus, the knowledge of God’s glory – something hidden from this sinful world because of the light provided to us by Jesus. The face of Christ, or his countenance, rests upon his beloved church and we are revived and full of light as we serve him.

So today, my friends, let us ask Jesus to cause his light to shine ever so brightly in our hearts! He is the only one worthy to rule! He is the light we were missing that now provides all we need!
