After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

–Parallel verse:
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭9‬:‭9‬
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

We see here that Jesus is asking his disciples to go find a colt that was tied up at the front of the village. Jesus has been away from the city now for quite some time. In Luke 17, he was traveling along the border of Samaria and Galilee, which is 60-70 miles away. That is probably 4-7 days walking away, not including all of his ministry stops.

Jesus could have given his disciples money to buy a colt, in order to fulfill the prophecy in Zechariah, if he wanted to fulfill the prophecy himself. Instead, he knew that God would help him. He knew the prophecy would have to be fulfilled because it was of God. And so he sent the disciples to look for a colt he did not prepare in advance to be there, but knew, because of his faith in God, it would be there.

Zechariah prophesied about this very moment 540 or so years earlier … Jesus would ride in on a foal, a donkey’s colt.

And so this passage has a prophecy fulfilled, that was also re-prophesied by Jesus! Pretty absolutely amazing. What does this tell me about Jesus? 1) He truly is the Son of God, 2) He did not need to try and force the situation for things to work out as they should, he simply trusted God.

This also tells us something about his disciples. They obeyed this strange request without question.

Lord, grow my faith in you and help me to believe you for the things that seem impossible in this world. May I make you proud!
