Waiting on God’s Guidance - ‭‭Acts‬ ‭1‬:‭23‬-‭26‬

So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

What I find fascinating here is that many, throughout the ages, have wondered if the apostles made the right move here. Why? Because a short time later, the Apostle Paul was directly called into ministry by the Lord Jesus Christ. Secondly, the casting of lots seems to leave this important decision up to chance. And thirdly, when they required these people to be around since the beginning, it in some ways may have discounted the leadership traits and contributions of those who join the church later but who grew deeper and closer to God quickly through serving him and knowing his heart.

I too share some of these concerns and think they are good things for us to explore the scriptures about and understand God’s heart in this matter. I think the intention was right here. And this could have been prayerfully considered and God’s guidance. But since those details are not mentioned, I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if instead of rushing to a decision on this, as it seems they did, they waited on God to reveal who he wanted in this position?

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭27‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ says: “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

As we make important decisions in our churches, we must seek God with a pure heart, wait on him to reveal his desires, study his Word and seek his heart. It is too easy to give God a deadline, and if he doesn’t meet our deadline, then take matters into our own hands.

I am not judging the Apostles here, they may have done exactly the right thing. But the text leaves some room for wondering, and since that is there, there is also room to look at best practices in following God.

Lord, teach me to seek you out where you may be found and wait on you for direction. Life can be hard, and the wait can be long. However, I have found it is always more than worth it. You love me beyond what I deserve and shower me with blessing after blessing; many of these blessings are too great for me to imagine! Thank you!

  1. Perhaps the gift of the story of Matthias is just what you’ve discussed here today Joe. That through the ages believers have pondered whether or not the apostles should have waited, and how it may apply to the way they make decisions. Always a good thing to think about! Thanks!
