As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
We see here that Jesus cared about the family issues his disciples were experiencing. Unlike many leaders who demand all of the focus be on them and their agenda, Jesus cared about the challenging life issues that his disciples had. He didn’t always fix their problems, but he helped where he could and always cared about them.
Peter said it this way: “The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (I Peter 4:7-10)
Just like Jesus, I am to be on the lookout for ways to help those in need, like Peter’s mother-in-law. Deeply love, show hospitality, and serve with my gifts for the good of others — this is God’s call on my life!
Lord, thank you for this amazing miracle which was awesome for Peter and his family. Thank you, as well, for caring enough to drop your agenda and spend time and energy to heal his mother. What a gift! You modeled the giving of great gifts of service. I will strive to do the same!
