Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
What do I give out of? In what spirit is my gift given? These are the types of questions Jesus is challenging us to contemplate here.
Giving is not just restricted to money either. It can involve how we give of our time and talents. And it can involve whether we give unconditionally, or expecting something in return.
If we are honest, most of the giving in this world is expected to be reciprocal. Some give money to get their names on buildings. Some give capital to businesses and expect a Return on Investment (ROI). Some give relationally and have relationship expectations as well.
Giving isn’t just a chore or requirement, it is a lifestyle. This widow understood this. She gave from a generous heart, all she had, and knew that her Father in heaven would provide for her. The only way I can give in this way is to fill up my tank with the goodness of God through his Holy Spirit in my heart.
Lord, teach me to give from a generous heart in all areas of my life: financially, relationally, in service, and in devotion to your will and your ways. Help me to love all those you put in my path and have a good, positive attitude while giving!
