Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.
Thoughts tend to gravitate to what we want or feel in the moment. This could be centered on food, sports, toys, power, or a myriad of other things. This passage tells us here to “fix” our thoughts on Jesus. This is an adjustment, or an altering of focus. Whatever else occupies our mind, refocus it on Jesus.
Jesus is our apostle and our high priest. An apostle leads us to God. A high priest sacrifices for sin to cleanse us from unrighteousness. Jesus led us to God and sacrificed himself for our sins to cleanse us. He was such a great savior for us!
Next we find this comparison between Moses and Jesus. Moses was revered by all Jews as one of the most faithful and closest to God. He regularly went in to see God and speak to him. And when he exited, his face glowed. So this was an important connection for the Jews.
Moses was of the best among those living in the house of God for sure. But Jesus was on a totally different level — he was over the house of God. He reigned and ruled over it. He also gave the most complete sacrifice for it. So we see that only Jesus can truly save us.
And we are the family, or “house of God”, that Jesus is over, if we confidently believe in him and hold fast to our eternal hope in the face of trials of many kinds.
Lord, you are worthy of all my praise and all my thanksgiving, for you are over all that is good in my life. Train me to let my confidence rest on you and you alone. And help me to keep this perspective in life — that you are my apostle and high priest!
