[Jesus speaking]
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
At first blush, this may look like a cryptic passage describing the way to enter heaven. I like to think of paths upward into the mountains and paths downward into the valleys. Typically, as one goes down into the valley, the roads widen and the path is easier. And as one goes up into the mountains, the roads narrow and become more steep.
In applying this analogy to our spiritual walk with God, we know that living a self-centered, pleasure-driven life is easy and it is how the majority of the world functions. This is because they are not sold out, 100% committed to following Jesus. And this is not a path to right standing with God. Because we place ourselves above God in going down this path. So it is the downward path to destruction — a wide gate and many go down this path.
However, if we ask, seek and knock after the things of God, and a relationship with God himself, this requires selfless living, a humble mindset, and a “sold out to God’s plan for us” approach to life. Few will commit in this way. And the work is hard, like climbing up the side of a mountain. As the path narrows, risk and danger are present. But God is our good shepherd and guides us.
As I reflect on this encouragement and warning, it reminds me to take frequent account of my goals and priorities in life — do they honor God and reflect the heart of Jesus to those around me?
Lord, thank you for your truth. It requires determination to be a sold-out follower for you. May I frequently check my motives and ambitions to bring them into line with your Word, the Bible, and grace.
