But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.
I met with someone a few years back who asked for my advice about what to do as they were entering the twilight of their career? I met with him 3-4 times giving him advice to build a personal relationship with Jesus and seek out God’s will for this stage of his life. I even helped him find employment.
But alas, single and used to the ways of the world, he rejected this direction. And as I interacted with him, it was apparent that he had personal and selfish agendas on his mind. Some value “instant money” over a “lifetime faithful friendship”, to their detriment.
People of the world have Spiritual Legwork Lacking. This is the category of people who built on the sand. Instant gratification is their motive —parties, video games, vacations, and the like. They fill up their lives with “experiences”. And when the “experiences” don’t deliver, it is tempting to blame someone else, or God.
In the end, I have met with many people who have lived this way most of their lives and find themselves in retirement years wondering what to do to find fulfillment. And they don’t know what their mission is supposed to be.
It is sad. Because the answer is simple. The same God who guides us when we are young will guide us when we are old. He has a great plan for each of us, if we would only humble our hearts, step back, and let him take the throne of our lives. He is the Master Life Navigator! And life with him is an incredible adventure!
Lord, thank you for this reminder to not compromise our longterm righteousness and success with you for the short-term experiences and the greed of this world. We were MEANT FOR SO MUCH MORE! I submit to your ways, your leadership, and your plans, today!
