Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
When I was in junior high and high school, my dad worked at the San Jose Rescue Mission. I loved playing football and looked up to several professional players on the San Francisco 49ers—guys like Ronnie Lott, Dwight Clark, Bill Romanowski, Roger Craig, Joe Montana, and Steve Young. These were the players who showed up in the stat lines: yards gained, sacks, tackles, and points scored.
As a lineman myself, I also paid close attention to players at my position—Fred Dean, Charles Haley, Bubba Paris, and Randy Wright.
One year, my dad helped coordinate a fundraising breakfast at the San Jose Rescue Mission, and the 49ers were invited to participate. Among all the potential donors, he invited me too. It felt like a dream come true. Some of the very players I admired were there in person. He even gave me a small book of black-and-white photos of many of the 49ers, with their autographs on them.
That sense of awe—the feeling of being near people I admired so deeply—still sticks with me. And yet, when I think about the majestic name of the Lord, even that experience, multiplied a thousand times, doesn’t come close. God is beyond impressive. he is unexplainably majestic.
What amazes me even more is that God doesn’t rely on powerful leaders, rulers, or respected figures to proclaim his greatness. In fact, it often seems that the more someone tries to promote themselves, the less truly impressive they are. Instead, God chooses the praise of children and infants. He delights in the simple, joyful worship that flows naturally from humble hearts.
Psalm 8 reminds us to lift our eyes—to consider all that God has made, all that he has done, and all that he is. When we do, the only fitting response is SHEER AWE!
So today, pause and reflect on his majesty. Let your heart be filled with wonder, and let your praise rise freely.
Lord, you are worthy of majestic worship because your majesty is unsurpassed. I praise your name. I will tell of your glory and your truth. I am filled with gratitude for your goodness, because you have chosen to have a relationship with me. What a wonderful God you are.
