While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”

Jesus did miracles no one else had done. Why did God give him this power and send him to earth?

It was to free captives and demonstrate his glory and power. Many speak but their words have no major impact, or even have a detrimental impact. Here we have a man that could not speak because his voice was taken captive by a demon, but he (or his friends) had a faith in Jesus that spoke loudly. The contrast is interesting, because so many have the ability to speak the words of life, but choose not to do so. This man did not.

Jesus said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭6‬) So Jesus spoke with the life that God gives, and this man was free from bondage.

What do you or I need freedom from today? Is it something big like an oppressive relationship or spirit? Or maybe it is a habit or addiction that is bad and keeps us from the freedom of mind and action to see the opportunities to love on others that God provides? Or is it something smaller like stress about a job, parenting kids, or a career issue?

In his name, and in recognition of his place as Lord, is the power to grant life and freedom from oppression and the things that weigh on our mind. What we have to do is repent of our sins, and commit to follow Jesus wholeheartedly in life. He will help us to clean up the bad habits and free us from oppression if we humbly call on his name!

Lord, thank you for this great example of faith by this man (or his family or friends) that resulted in him approaching Jesus for healing. Help me to approach you for healing of my mind and restoring my body to serve you and seek you first. You are the Good Shepherd who will guide me and provide all I need.
