Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
At this the servant fell on his knees before him. “Be patient with me,” he begged, “and I will pay back everything.” The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
Ten thousand bags of gold is a whole lot of gold. It is so much gold, I think it would be hard to assess its value. How does a servant rack up so much debt?
We all have an astronomical debt of sin we have piled up in life. The weight of our sin is so great we cannot carry it. We cannot make amends. Its consequence, according to the Bible, is eternal death and destruction. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
We all needed a Savior; we needed a redeemer to rescue us from certain eternal death. Enter Jesus, stage right. He came to earth to be our perfect, sacrificial lamb.
Just like the kind ruler who forgave his servant his enormous debt, Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross, and now we are forgiven and we can have a new life, through Jesus, with God.
When I think about the depths of sin and shame I came from, the rescue mission and price paid to redeem me by Jesus is all the more powerful and significant.
Lord, help me to keep in mind and in focus the price you paid to redeem my life! I submit all I am and all I have to you. “Search me and know me. Try me and see my anxious thoughts. And lead me in the way everlasting!”
