That is why I remind you to fan into flame the gracious gift of God, [that inner fire—the special endowment] which is in you through the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination]. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].
For Christ-followers, God has given us a “living -in-our-hearts” gift, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is equal to God, lives in our hearts, and is designed to sanctify and purify us. He helps to change our sinful hearts into kind and good hearts. Hearts like God’s own heart.
We are called to fan this gift into flame. This means we are to embrace God’s Spirit so completely, that it ignites in our lives and is a bright and active light!
Timothy was ordained as a pastor and Paul laid hands on him (likely with the church elders).
When we enter into the army of God (or his service), we are called to serve him wholeheartedly in the eternal battle for souls. Some would pretend there is no real battle, no good and evil. Others define their own truth, to make their life more comfortable as they sit on the sidelines.
But Christians who are wholeheartedly committed to God and his will, live differently. They are powerful with the spiritual weapons God gives: his Word and Prayer. They love sacrificially and unconditionally. And they make considerate decisions out of an eternal perspective. They are not impulsive in relationships acting on their selfish passions or desires.
We are called to a more adventurous, a more challenging, and a more rewarding life. A life lived in freedom from sin’s bondage, and with a boldness to proclaim the truth and to WOW people with our love.
Lord, help me to purify my motives and fan the flame of your Spirit within me. Fill me to overflowing with your grace and mercy. May I struggle and fight and intentionally love those who are lost. And in doing so, save some.
