The Truth Stand‭‭ - Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬-‭13‬

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

--Parallel verses:
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭34‬-‭39‬
[Jesus speaking]
Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn “ ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

We live in a society that has slowly eroded away many of the Christian values the United States was founded on. Many. today, value family, friends, or intimate partner relationships over God’s Word. Jesus tells his disciples here that he did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

So many who subscribe to the “pick out the parts of the gospel I like” religion, will never quote these verses.

As Christ-followers, we must place obedience to Jesus and God’s Word above our other relationships in life. Why? 1) Because this world and its possessions and relationships will eventually fade away, but our souls have the potential to live with Jesus in eternity.

2) Because God’s plans are good and better than our plans. He wants none to perish, so he will challenge those who are heading down the wrong road — sometimes directly (like the Apostle Paul) and most of the time through his faithful disciples.

3) When we stand for truth against the swift current of sin in this world, our faith becomes stronger, we draw closer to God and our brothers and sisters in Christ, and we bear good fruit.

Be alert and pay attention! Following Jesus is not about “world peace”. It is about principles like obedience to his commands, loving, speaking truth, discipling, guarding the flock against wolves, and serving our fellow man. Some of these things will be popular, others divisive.

When division in families or friend groups happens due to a truth stand, we are to pray for repentance, stand firm, and trust God to do his work.

When we wield the Sword of the Spirit to fight off false doctrine and evil, it is a sharp weapon. Here it says dividing joints and marrow, soul and spirit. Those who are living in sin, “smart” in pain at its correction. And many will lash out and persecute the faithful follower of Jesus. This is to be expected.

Our job is to be obedient and faithful in love. God does the heart-transformation work. And those in sin must decide, with their free will, whether to follow God and repent or to justify their actions (most of the time through comparative righteousness).

So we stand firm on The Rock (II Samuel 22:1-51 aka David’s Song) that is Jesus Christ, the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), our Firm Foundation (II Timothy 2:16-19) and The Way, The Truth and The Life (John 14:6). And we trust our perfectly good Father, who we belong to, to reward us in eternity for our hard truth stands.

Lord, thank you for your Word which does not sway in the wind with the changing tides of the varying cultural norms of the day. You are solid and dependable. You are unshakable. You are my God.
