Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
Jesus knew ahead of time that Judas would betray him. He was God, so this could be because he is prescient, though he set aside much of his heavenly authority when he came to earth as a poor and lowly baby.
I think he also had such great love, that he could see the gradual falling away of Judas. He could see the early warning signs, the leading indicators to this heinous sin.
This sin is great, and it is also, based on my experience, a product of the buildup of other sinful habits and ways that Judas let into his heart. As I look at the times I have fallen in sin, most of the time there are leading indicators — a thought, a compromise, an action, a root of bitterness, etc.
What are the leading indicators to my great sin potential, and how can I stop sin “dead in its tracks” before it gets any momentum in my heart?
How sad it must have been for Jesus to watch Judas give in to temptation and ultimately bigger and bigger sins.
Lord, keep my heart pure and my accounts with you over sin short. Help me to crave your word, be humble, and serve you faithfully.
