With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

Prophecy is a future prediction of a factual event. God gives the prophet a view into the future. It really cannot change.

Peter was ready to fight, but he started fighting at the wrong time and he was using the wrong weapons. This battle was a spiritual one for the sinners who wanted a Savior, and his weapons should have been prayer and scripture, not a sword.

Jesus rebukes Peter here. He is trying to get Peter to see that the goal is much different when you are sent on a mission with God.

Peter had the passion and desire to fight. This is more than some, who sit on the sidelines. But he did not have the insight and wisdom to fight in the right way. He did not fight in a way that honored God.

How do I fight my battles? What weapons do I use?

Lord, thank you for this example of how you submitted yourself humbly to God’s will. You also corrected Peter so he would understand (at a later date) to fight battles with the right weapons. Your plans are infinite. Help me to trust you and act in accordance with your will.
