Caring Out of Selflessness‭‭ - Acts‬ ‭27‬:‭9‬-‭12‬

Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them, “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.” But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus …

One of the most selfless people I have heard of, outside of Jesus, was Francis of Assisi. As a young man, he knew the perils of war, having been enlisted. He came home dazed and confused at the violence and hatred portrayed. And he dedicated his life to helping and caring for others and animals. While I don’t share all of his beliefs about war, one thing he did really left a mark on me. In the middle of the Crusades, he, considered an enemy in Arabian countries, walked through their country all the way up to the Sultan (supreme leader). And he pleaded with him to help bring peace.

With no worry for his own life, he sacrificed it by walking to his sure death to talk with the Sultan. But God did a miracle and no one touched him. After his meeting he was granted safe passage out.

Paul here is completely selfless too. Had he wanted to escape, a shipwreck would have given him ample opportunity to do so. He was likely a very strong swimmer, having survived a couple of shipwrecks. He also knew God promised he would testify for his faith in Rome, so he was not really worried about his life. He trusted God. When God gave a promise … it came true.

He, however, cared significantly for the others on his boat, those who were guarding him. He did not want harm to come to them. It really did not matter whether they were kind or mean to him. God had placed these men in his spiritual care while he was with them, and he loved them.

Paul, here, like Francis of Assisi did later on, acted completely selflessly. And I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those on board came to know Jesus and followed him wholeheartedly as a result.

Lord, help me to have the same mindset and attitude as you did — that of a humble servant of the Most High King. May I care more for others than I do for my personal safety.
