Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.

Jesus was, first of all, a humble servant. Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭6‬-‭8‬ ‭says of Jesus: “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”

‭‭We see this throughout his ministry here on earth. In this passage, he serves the people through preaching God’s Word. It said his words had authority. What does this mean? Does it mean he shouted them out, or people listened because they were afraid of him and his power? No! It means his words had a weight and relevance to their lives that was real and captivating. His words were spoken from a heart fully committed to God. They were backed up by his actions. He had authority because when he spoke about truth in the Word of God — he lived it. With authority comes a responsibility: to use it for the intention by which it was granted. God grants us authority to speak his words and do his will. We must hold onto this responsibility dearly. We must not take it lightly. “He [Jesus] replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:18-20)

‭‭Jesus also gave his disciples authority to cast out demons and to trample under foot serpents and scorpions (analogies to Satan’s forces of evil). We must stay humble in this work, giving all praise, glory, and honor to him. So how do we gain prominence in the minds and hearts of others? How do we have weight or authority in what we say? We do this by being a surrendered and available servant of the Most High God and by seeking first his kingdom and his righteousness.

Lord, thank you for your authority in life that is real and living. You are true and consistent with your words and your actions. You are a refreshingly honest Savior. Teach me to be humble and honest like you. Then the authority you grant me will shine through in the great things you do that I get to participate in. Praise you Jesus! You bring joy and freedom to my life!
