(emphasis mine)
PUT TO DEATH, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also RID YOURSELVES of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on THE NEW SELF, which is BEING RENEWED in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
--Parallel verses:
Ephesians 4:25-32
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
We have two rather long lists of sinful behaviors here today. Some are sins of commission, like brawling, slander, lying, sexual immorality, and impure activities. Others deal with sins of omission: bitterness, malice, lust, and greed. All are included in the bucket or package that is referred to as our old self (aka: our selfish self or our sin-prone self or our self-actualized self).
Some may say: “I have a right to feel this way because I have been harmed, treated unfairly, unloved, and/or slandered or hurt.”
But Jesus set the standard for us to follow here: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.”
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:38-39, 43-45)
So today I have a choice, 1) clothe myself in my renewed spiritual body and live for Christ, casting aside all of these worldly and sinful ways of thinking and dealing. This looks like being kind and compassionate, forgiving each other and building each other up. This looks like being molded in easy and hard times into the image of my Savior! Or, 2) I can choose to receive back the chains I have been freed from, of envy, bitterness, anger, slander, malice, greed, etc. I can live a life full of worldly pleasure that ends in sinful defeat.
Lord, I choose you. I choose to be clothed in my Savior and Lord. I cast off all the sinful ways that tempt me to take back the chains that wrecked my heart. Broken as I am, I choose to follow you and be restored, healed, and used for your glory!
