That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes. “What honor and recognition has Mordecai received for this?” the king asked. “Nothing has been done for him,” his attendants answered.”

Many times, hearing God’s voice is referred to as a quiet whisper, as in a gentle breeze blowing past our minds. Sometimes it can be violent as an earthquake or persistent and relentless like a locomotive.

It would seem as if his actions take on similarly different looks too. Here he gently nudges King Xerxes, causing a sleepless night. On this night, the king reads the “book of the chronicles” and just so happens to read about Mordecai exposing the plot to take his life. All of this happens not by chance, but by divine providence — on the night before Esther is to have an audience with the king.

It is the quiet way that God many times works behind the scenes to get otherwise godless people to act according to his will. And so we see here … God’s timing is incredible. He does not always conquer in force, but many times he works through human rulers or those in positions of power to bring about his will.

There are so many stories of God doing this in the Bible and after it was written, even in my own life. He is always working for our good, and sometimes that work takes the form of nudges. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬) Believe it and trust it! God is faithful to his followers.

Thank you, Lord, for working for my good today. I don’t need to see it or orchestrate how I think you should act, in order to trust that you are always working for my good. Why? Because I love you and have been called according to your purposes – these are the only qualifications for your promise to work for my good!
