When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

I love the imagery in this passage. The psalmist first recognizes the lost state of his life — grieved, embittered, senseless, and ignorant. 1) We are ignorant without God because he is the source of all wisdom and truth. 2) We are senseless on our own. Why? Because our logic does not make sense in God’s grand plans of eternity. And senseless can also indicate a dulling of the senses. Some people are so broken, bitter, and angry, they can no longer feel compassion for others, see into their hearts, touch them — giving them big hugs. They cannot taste and see that God and his ways are good. And they cannot smell the sweet aromas of a life lived in service to God. 3) Bitterness, left unchecked by forgiveness, will mark you physically and spiritually. It will leave you jaded and judgmental. 4) And grief, allowed to linger too long, can turn into depression, inactivity, and a host of other problems.

No wonder he perceives himself as a brute beast! And so many are there or moving that direction in this world today. They need a “truth in love” wake up call. They need us to be the hands and feet of Jesus to them. Take comfort my friends, God will hold your hand and guide you around in the ways that are best in this life, if you ask him to. He will be a safe haven and a refuge for his children. He will fortify your position and provide for you.

Lord, I realize the depth of my sin. I was an arrogant and angry man who was ensnared in the world and its evil vices. And you rescued me and SET ME FREE! You deserve all of the glory and praise! I am living life alongside your Spirit. And I am enjoying all the opportunities you bring to my table, to serve and be a blessing! Thank you Lord! You have freed me to love and serve!
