By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Abraham teaches me some of the very foundational elements of faith. He faced the fear of the unknown head-on, packing up his bags and heading out to follow God to “who knows where”. Many are disabled in their own strength by the fear of the unknown. This fear is used to manipulate people and force them into submission, by evil people at times.
But with God by my side, the fear of the unknown transforms into the adventures of the unknown! I need not fear, because like the 23rd Psalm says: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalms 23:1-4)
Fear is replaced by faith and fearless faith is fierce in its power!
Abraham lived life constantly on the move. He did this because he was obedient to God and he followed him. His plans were put on hold to follow God’s plans. His faith was faithful and flexible to God’s call.
Lord, teach me to be like Abraham and build my faith on you and not let fear paralyze me or lead me to comfort in this world over adventure with you. I want to follow your lead without hesitation and with full commitment. Praise you, Lord.
