Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
--Parallel verses:
Romans 1:20
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Malachi 3:6
I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.
This is a quite simple statement. Jesus is unchanging. He stays the same. John, chapter one, tells us that Jesus was with God at the creation of the world. So from the creation of the world until now, he has not changed. Who he is, what he stands for, his heart, his nature, his priorities, his mission of redemption of people to God — none of these things have ever changed.
When he became a man in human form, he was still God. He never changed.
And God never changes either. He is constantly good, constantly loving, constantly just, and constantly full of grace and compassion for his people.
So in a world of people and things who change allegiance and who have shifting loyalties - where promises are not kept and people use each other, lie to each other, and abuse each other - we have the opportunity to trust in an unchanging and good God and his son, Jesus Christ!
The old hymn comes to mind: “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.”
So what will I choose to stand on today? The constant, unchanging rock of Jesus Christ or the shifting sand of this world? And how do I effectively stand on the rock that is Jesus?
The good news is he tells us here: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
To stand on the rock of Christ I must hear his word and act on it.
Lord, thank you for this reminder that you are unchanging - the same yesterday, today, and forever. May I stand on you, the solid rock! All other things in this world that I could put my trust in are sinking sand.
