In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

There used to be a show when I was growing up called The Twilight Zone. It was full of mystery, aliens, odd things, and such. And it would say, “You are now entering the Twilight Zone.”

In a sort of mysterious, Twilight Zone-type way, we have the final level of understanding about Jesus and how he relates to us. 1) He is God. This is clear in the Bible. 2) He was born on earth and he arose from the dead, so he is our kin — our brother who lives. And, 3) He is our “way back” great grandfather, of sorts. He was present at creation, made the world as God, and made Adam and Eve and all of the animals. But Adam, he made “in his own image”.

So Jesus can call us grandsons and granddaughters, brothers and sisters, and sons and daughters. This is a mystery of God. And it is connected to the mystery of Jesus being fully God and fully man. We cannot fully understand how this happened, but we can simply believe it.

What does this mean for me today? It means that I have an all-powerful God who loves me, provides for me, and plans for my good as I follow him. It also means that my God, in the person of Jesus Christ, is a big brother who can relate to me in all of life’s struggles. And in the same God, I have the one who created me and knows how I am wired and what I am made of.

Lord, thank you for this mysterious, multi-faceted way you relate to me. I know whatever the situation, I can always count on you to see me through.
