Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

When planning a trip, you must have a destination in mind. This is true of car trips, boat trips, airplane trips, etc. One year, we planned a trip to Bozeman, MT for a wedding. We charted out our course and we were making good time. It was also at the end of the month, and I had a lot of insurance business closing, so I had to make some stops to check in with staff on this business, as the cell reception was spotty. At one stop, I got back in the car and noticed that our google map had lost connection. It then regained connection, so I pressed the “route” button and finished heading on our way.

When we arrived at our destination, I was a bit confused. We were in a subdivision instead of at an event center for the wedding rehearsal. It turned out we were 140 miles west of our original destination. I had not checked the map app to see if our original route was still loaded when I reconnected at the last stop. It somehow loaded a new destination for us (still not sure how that happened). My focus got distracted, and we ended up 70 miles or so off course.

In our lives these types of distractions and diversions are common as well. We lose focus on what our goals and priorities should be and get fixed or focused on things that take us off of the destination or goal God has for us.

There are many self-help books, psychological consulting books, business coaching books, etc. that offer advice as to where we should fix our focus and time. Some of these practices may be good to implement, to a lesser degree, in our lives. However, the main focus of our attention needs to be fixed on Jesus Christ. When we focus on him and his life principles and priorities … spiritual success and significance follows.

Why should we trust Jesus to be the focus of our life? Here are some of his attributes that qualify him: 1) He is our Apostle (the authority on God’s best way of living), 2) He is our High Priest (he redeemed us with his perfect sacrifice and petitions God on our behalf), 3) He was faithful to God (in his appointment or mission to die as the perfect sacrifice to save us from our sins), and 4) He has been given authority over God’s house (or his spiritual kingdom).

So today, Lord, I seek to fix my eyes on Jesus the author and finisher of my faith (Hebrews 12:2). He is the only one who can free me from worry, fear, and frustration, fill me with his strength, goodness, and hope, and focus me on the right mind frame and priorities for my days, weeks and months ahead.
