We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
So many, these days, do not know the truth of the Bible at any depth. They know what it says in some of the famous verses, but they do not take it to heart. “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have HIDDEN your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalms 119:9-11, emphasis mine)
Do I hide God’s word in my heart? Do I study it throughout the day? Will I seek him and seek after his ways with all my heart?
Here we see the writer of Hebrews chastising the Jews because of their lack of understanding of the spiritual things of God. They only eat baby food; they cannot digest meat. They do not wrestle with the things of God and the call of his Spirit on their hearts, in order to understand and obey it. In contrast, by constant use of the Word of God, we can clearly distinguish good from evil.
Satan is bent on deceiving us. He is called the Father of Lies. Unless we train our minds to know the truth inside and out, and we live by it, we will fall to his temptations and live in sin.
Lord, cleanse my heart and purify my mind with your holy and true Word. Help me to be full of it all day long and overflow your goodness into the lives of those around me. May your Word shine forth into the darkness so I can rescue lost souls by your power into the saving grace of Jesus Christ!
