It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
God invests in us and he is doing so expecting us to realize our great potential in him. This is why we were created in the first place! When we taste of his goodness, drink of his love and swim in the purifying water of his mercy and grace, we are changed. If not, and we retreat back to our old sinful ways, we are lost.
The point is that once freed from sin’s death trap, we cannot enter into it voluntarily and expect to receive God’s grace all over again. Jesus died for our sins once and for all. This is a chance to enter into God’s kingdom and have our slate wiped clean. We cannot leave and go back and live in filth again and expect to be redeemed again.
This is different from committing a sin in life. This rejection of Jesus is a purposeful life track that is pointed towards sin. And God makes it clear here that he will not allow an “in and out and in again”, whishywashy faith to be rewarded.
Thank you, Lord, for the clarity here that you bring to the decision to follow Jesus. It is not to be taken lightly. We are to decide if we want to follow him, and if so, do it wholeheartedly. Give me a faith that perseveres through all types of obstacles in life. Help me to reflect you in all my relationships. May others come to know you all around me.
