For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”
In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
It is not lost on me that the first covenant was broken technically, and at the heart of the covenant, by the Jews. This covenant was with Abraham, and continued through Moses, the kings, judges, priests, and prophets. God set societal rules that were to point the way to righteous living. But he also spoke of the heart condition and his desire to be in relationship with his people.
So God made another way, another covenant with his people. He made this covenant not only with the strength of his living word, he also made it more personal for us. He sent his loved one, his Son.
The first covenant God kept, though the Jews did not. So it would figure he could back out of the covenant. But no, God lived his people too much. He made a way through a lot of pain to love us personally again.
The new covenant was not written on paper but on the minds and in the hearts of his people. It is made with us and it has a deposit, or guarantee — The Holy Spirit who lives in a true believer’s heart.
So to dwell with a flesh and bone God who reigns supreme, I must do away with the gods of this world in all of their forms: wood, metal, brick, etc. Only one God demands and deserves our complete loyalty. And he is a three-part God, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
So I say write away, Lord Jesus. My heart and mind are your paper. Build into me the truth of your word.
