For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.
--Parallel verses:
I Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Merit-based systems are everywhere—sports teams, music competitions, college admissions, and more. Like it or not, many opportunities in this world are earned through merit. That’s not necessarily bad. These systems often encourage us to work hard, grow in knowledge, develop expertise, communicate effectively, and build meaningful relationships.
What’s truly fascinating—and freeing—about God's kingdom is that it doesn’t operate on merit, but on value.
Notice the language used in this passage. First, the phrase brothers and sisters speaks of being in the same family—a place of belonging, heritage, loyalty, and support. Second, we are described as loved by God, which means he genuinely cares for us and treasures us as his children. And third, we are chosen. God picked us and pursued us—not because of anything we’ve accomplished or could offer him, but simply because of his love. Our value isn’t based on status, skill, beauty, or intelligence.
As a chosen and deeply valued child of God, I can live with confidence. I can take bold steps in relationships and in life, knowing that if I walk in his will, he is with me. I don’t need to carry the pressure to perform, to be more, or to measure up. Instead, I am freed to pass on the grace and gifts he’s given me — to others.
Thank you, Lord, for reminding me through this passage that you value me not for what I do, but simply because I am your child. May I reflect your love and lordship over my life to those around me.
