The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd. Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body. Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

We live in a world where self-help books are prevalent, google can seem to have the answers we need, and knowledge is right around the corner. So many rely on these tools not just for quick reference but also for “how to live life”. Yet the reality is — only God is truly wise. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬) The apparent wisdom of this world is a facade. The world fronts wisdom, but leaves us hurting from its sinful and deceptive ways. Our daily duty in refining our hearts in the ways of wisdom is this: fear God and keep his commandments. It’s simple right? Except when we fall right back into sin and the faulty thinking which says, “I deserve this”, or “I am going to take this pleasure (name yours)”, instead of waiting for God to provide or going to him with our needs first.

Lord, don’t give up on me. Keep me close to your heart. Just when I think I have sin conquered or have a good pattern of life going, I fall. But you are right there to restore me. You never give up on me. You always love me and plan for my best. Thank you for being so loving, so faithful, and so wise!
