Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Why does God speak to Isaiah the prophet and ask these questions? Isaiah 40 is full of questions. Here are some others: 1) “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breath of his hand marked off the heavens?” 2) “Who held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills on the balance?” 3) “Who has understood the mind of the Lord, or instructed him as his counselor?” 4) “Who has taught him knowledge or showed him the path of understanding?”
So many times in my life I have thought that my way or my path is the way I should go. And this is dangerous when I first do not read and understand the Word of God, as well as pray and seek the heart of God on a matter. Humility is a trait that I have found is hard to maintain, especially when pain is involved.
Maybe this was a similar circumstance for the Israelites here, as Isaiah preached to them the Words of the Lord. And so he reminds them of how great and massively powerful and wise God is. He does not need their help to make decisions. His ways are just and right. And he will not share the throne with us.
So we must humble ourselves and seek God’s wisdom. We cannot go off on our own spiritual rabbit trail, or reinterpret scripture to match culture or our wants. God’s truth is eternal, it is eternally relevant, and it always results in righteousness.
So we must trust his order in life, the role he places us in, and his power to rescue and save us in trials. God’s attributes should give us confidence. He sees all that happens in our lives. He: 1) is tireless and his understanding is unfathomable, 2) gives strength to the weary and power to the weak, 3) gives us strength to soar high above the challenges and problems of this world.
When we trust God and those he has put in authority over us, he will make things right. He will give us strength and power.
Ok, but what if I just feel like I am not fulfilled or happy or able to control the outcomes I want, that I think are good? This is where faith comes in.
He says he will help me soar like eagles, run and not grow weary, and walk and not grow faint. He has the ability to lift me up when I am weak. He has the ability to shift circumstances in an instant to change things. But what if he does not? What if he wants me to walk through the trial trusting him?
Lord, you ask great questions of me. I sometimes tend towards complaining or grumbling, instead of asking these same questions and reflecting on you. Teach me, refine me, mold me, and shape me to be a more useful vessel in your hands here on earth.
