In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

-Parallel verses:
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬-‭13‬
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭17‬
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

As we think about Jesus and his birthday today, how do we understand it? All of us have a day we were born. Birthdays are celebrated not so much because of our age. They are celebrated because of a person we love who brings joy to our life. WE CELEBRATE THEM!

Jesus, God’s One and Only Son, was The Word Made Flesh among us. His birthdate as a spiritual person is unknown. His birthdate on earth we track our calendars by; it was nearly 2024 years ago. What was significant about his birth was not only his birth, but his life. His birth was foretold by the prophets of old; it was marked by a virgin conceiving him, angels proclaiming it, a star noting his birthplace, shepherds and wise men traveling to see it, and a heavenly host of angels singing about it. “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (‭‭Luke‬ ‭2‬:‭13‬-‭14‬)

But even more significant was what he accomplished in his life. He became flesh and dwelt among us. “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”
(‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬)

Before Jesus’ human birth: The Word of God was alive at the beginning, was used to make all that we are and see. It gave the Jews instructions on how to live. It protected them and set them apart.

At his birth: He was sent to become human and to save us from our sins by becoming the perfect sacrifice for all time: past, present, and future.

At his death and resurrection: He died for our sins, conquered the power of sin and death, and rose victorious — to appear in his risen form to over 500 eyewitnesses.

Since his birth and today: The Word of God, Jesus, sits enthroned at the right hand of God. He is our Lord and Savior. He has placed his Spirit in our hearts. And he gives us rebirth and transforms our minds to think and act like he did in this world. We become full of his love and share his truth with those around us.

Today, we have The Word of God! It is powerful and it penetrates the heart. The Word of God sees to the thoughts, motivations, and attitudes of our heart. It sees all and knows all! And it is an offensive spiritual weapon that we can fight with.

Last night, I was plagued in the middle of the night by an attack of frustration, bitterness, and anger. I decided, instead of giving ground to this attack, to call it out and apply God’s Word. I put on Proverbs and listened to chapters 1-16. I soaked my mind in the Word of God. And I am happy to report that it does work! It is a sword by which I can fight off the Devil’s schemes to corrupt my heart.

So today, my friends, as we celebrate Christmas, let us not just view this day as the celebration of a “baby king”. But let us remember we celebrate the active and living Word of God, who became flesh to save us.

My prayer for me and you:
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.”
(‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1‬:‭17‬-‭21‬)
