[Jesus speaking]
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

When I think of purses, I think of these big monstrosities that moms carry around sometimes. The kind of thing that has every imaginable gadget needed for any myriad of circumstances.

Somehow, I don’t think this is the type of purse Jesus was referencing here. It is probably more like a modern-day wallet in a pocket. The purses would hold their coin and/or paper money. They would be sewn into their clothing at times so people could travel with them.
`
The problem with pockets is they wear out over time. Wallets can get holes in them. And this was likely the case (maybe even more so without machine manufacturing) back then. So they would try to find the best materials to make them out of.

Jesus takes this problem of having wallets or purses that wear out, and compares it to spiritual things. Think of the purse or wallet as your heart of generosity. And the currency is what you trade your earthly treasures for. When we give our treasures: money, talents, and time to serve and bless those in need, then we gain spiritual treasures back in return.

This is the ultimate currency exchange counter for generating heavenly wealth. In comes the resources of this world that we are given by God, and out goes spiritual blessings, both here in eternity.

Lord, help me to revalue my things in light of eternity. May I focus on the eternal benefits and lasting impact in my relationships. No time to waste! All I have can be traded in for infinitely more in eternity! Oh, that every day I may see your eternal value system!
