Hosanna to the Coming Messiah‭‭ - Mark‬ ‭11‬:‭8‬-‭11‬

Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

Here we see people who clearly recognize that Jesus is the Messiah. He is God’s Son. This is indicated by the shouts they made: 1) “Hosanna” 2) “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” 3) “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

Hosanna means to save, a clear reference to Jesus as their Savior.

Psalm 118:25-27 says this: “Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you. The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.”

How fitting is it that they quoted this scripture of Jesus, as he rode in on a donkey. He is our Savior! He does come in the name of the Lord. The blessing of God is all around him. He is the Light of the World that God sent to shine on us to save us from our sins. And they did enter into a festal procession on his entry!

Isaiah ‭9‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ says: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
They were referencing the fact that Jesus was the chosen one from King David’s lineage, the “forever ruler” in peace.

They clearly saw that Jesus fulfilled all of the prophecies written about him and they celebrated this. It was truly a joyful time for Jesus (though he knew it would be short-lived). He was finally, it seemed, getting through to all of these people.

Lord, I am thankful that you came to earth as our Savior, our coming King, the Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, and Everlasting Father. You had the weight of the government on your shoulders. And you rule in justice and righteousness! Praise your name! Hosanna! — to our King who saves!
