While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’ David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with delight.
The mysteries of God are hard for finite humans to understand. Many try to make this mystery fit into the human mind: that Jesus was at once God (present at creation and throughout time) and a human, who was born of the virgin, Mary, in the lineage of King David.
Rather than getting stuck on trying to understand something outside of our world’s limitations of time and space, would not a better response be to hold God high and in awe? To worship him for his mysterious attributes?
I need to stop always demanding a perfect answer for God’s attributes and accept them as mysterious and marvel at them.
If we have a finite God, would he not also be weak and of relatively little power? Maybe this is how the Greek gods are and superheroes that we dream up?
For my part, I love the fact that my God is mysterious and at times so hard to fully comprehend. This is what makes him great!
Lord, I hold you in the highest place. You are awe-inspiring. Your greatness is beyond compare on this earth, and yet you love me. Thank you for being at once the God of the universe and the God who cares about my individual life. May I honor you with my full devotion and access to every area of my heart.
