Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

Hebrews 13:1-3
Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.
When I think about these women in Jesus’ life, they are dear sister and mother-types. They loved him as their own brother and son. And when he was traveling and away from his own mother, they stepped in and provided the constant presence of care and comfort that many women around the world are known for.
It is hard to fully understand this type of care and love … until it is missing. I remember the first Christmas after my mom had passed away when I was thirteen. My dad tried to make it special like she did, but it was not the same. There were the decorations, the festive drinks and events, the presents; but the extra special touch and atmosphere and ambiance were not there — it was missing.
As with my mom, it is likely that these women provided this special touch and love, along with providing food and lodging, clothes and the nursing of wounds.
It is not lost on me that Mark specifically mentions these women here. While many had fallen away from Jesus, these women were strong and stayed there, even if only to comfort him and take care of him by their presence. They were powerful allies to Jesus in his time of need.
I also have some great women in my life, who have come around me and really comforted me. First, my mother while she lived was such a blessing. Second, my sisters and some of my mother’s friends stepped up to love on me in powerful ways after she died. Third, my wife, Cherish, has been a big blessing and encouragement to me throughout our marriage. And now, the women in my community group and church have cared for and blessed me while I have been serving in ministry over the years. Some gave us food and money when needed. One lady brought eggs to church for me and blessed me in this way. It is such a blessing to receive this type of hospitality and it ministers to me deeply, in my heart.
What can I learn from these women? It is simply this: intentional acts of love, making people feel extra special, this is a big part of the administration of God’s love in the church. It is not fancy words, but simple actions of care that have the most impact!
Lord, I know you highly valued the women who served as mothers and sisters in your life. Where would I be without those who take good care of me? I honor them and pray for your blessings over them today. They love you well by loving me well.
