That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Life can deal us seemingly astronomically high mountains to climb. If we look at the entire climb at once, we can get discouraged. But if we go back to the Savior, Jesus Christ, he can calm any waves or wind that may have arisen.
Some questions arise: How does one sleep during a storm? How do we find rest amidst chaos? Jesus is the example, he was at complete peace because he trusted God completely.
The disciples tried and tried to manage the boat through the storm, but they failed time and again. It wasn’t until they asked Jesus for help that he gave it. I don’t think Jesus was upset with them for asking for help, it was the way they asked — accusatory, wondering what he was doing and why he didn't care.
When I ask God for help, how do I ask? Do I get mad at him for not fixing life’s problems on my timeline? Or do I ask in faith that he controls all and has my good in mind?
Lord, you have immense power to change every circumstance in my life. I trust you. You are always faithful. Thank you for watching over me and providing for me.
