[Jesus speaking]
Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.

--Parallel verses:
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭13‬-‭16‬
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

I love to cook and try out new mixtures of spices and new techniques with food. Sometimes the addition of an unexpected spice can really jazz up a main dish. But one thing I have found to be true is this: without enough salt, everything tastes rather bland.

Just like salt in cooking is critical, so our testimony and the work of God in our lives is critical to how we project his glory into a hurting world.

Salt is a practical ingredient in many dishes. Typically every pallet can handle and appreciate salt. Now spices like rosemary, thyme, cayenne pepper, ginger, or nutmeg are different, they have their distinctive purpose and need to be applied in just the right amount.

As well, spiritually we have different gifts and abilities, even different spiritual gifts as God apportions them. But one thing every disciple of Jesus Christ has is their testimony — the evidence of God’s work in their lives. This is our salt, our light in the world.

In the same way we are called to maintain our saltiness and shine our light brightly. We are not to shy away from sharing our testimony of God’s goodness, or put ourselves in safe positions to not have to be a witness to the truth. Instead, boldly we are called to evangelize and brightly we are called to shine in the darkness!

Lord, help me to never shy away from sharing my testimony of your faith. I want to stay salty and bright!
