[Jesus speaking]
The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.
--Parallel verses:
Matthew 7:26-27
[Jesus speaking]
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.
Life is full of challenges. Some of these challenges come because of sin. Others are somewhat self-inflicted in a good way: Saving money for retirement is a challenge of budgeting and sacrificing now for later or taking extra time to spend dwelling with God every day, means we wake up earlier or sacrifice some fun things in the process.
What do I build and invest in?
This type of soil is shallow, dirt mixed in with rocks. The hard work of tilling the soil, picking out the rocks was not done. So when the wind and rain came, the plant was destroyed. It had no root system to survive. When hard times presented themselves (because they committed to live by the truth in a sinful world), they turned away.
How do I build a deeper root system for my faith?
Lord, thank you for this passage that alerts me to an attitude of “living in the moment” and for myself. I must seek hard after you, to find you. Help me to prioritize you first.
