He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.” Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.””
Jesus spoke in parables. Why? Parables are stories people can relate to. They are also a bit mysterious.
He told his disciples the meanings, but for some reason he left the meaning hidden for a time from the crowd. Could it be that they were not ready to hear the truths in these parables yet?
“He said, “Go and tell this people: ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”” (Isaiah 6:9-10)
Some people cannot understand the things of God because they choose not to. They are controlled by the Prince of Darkness and have chosen a path of sinful behavior. Satan pollutes their minds.
Now to the parable of the yeast! I find that as a little bit of yeast rises the whole dough and makes it a tasty bread, so is the impact of the Spirit of God in our hearts. He works his way into every part and purifies our hearts and makes them holy, acceptable, and pleasing to God.
Lord, please make my heart a heart after your own heart. Teach me to love you and seek wholly after you and you alone.
