In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ” John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
One thing I love about John the Baptist is that he spoke the truth succinctly and directly. Here he says, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Not a lot of beating around the bush.
John lived in the desert, very simply. He resided in caves, made his clothes out of animal skins, and ate locusts and honey. When people saw John the Baptist, he looked wild, and I am guessing people listened to him because he was interesting.
He was, however, also full of the Spirit of God, which convicted people to repent of their sins, and follow God. His call was piercing — to the heart; and his life was a model of devotion to God.
What do I need to repent of today? Am I listening to those who are calling me to get close to God?
Lord, thank you for this passage, talking about who John the Baptist was. He was a remarkable man! He made a major impact for your kingdom. May it be so said of me!
