Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Having a pure heart — this speaks to pure motives and pure aspirations, holy goals and ambitions in life.
Some people pursue God to such a degree that they inevitably touch people all the time with God’s love, grace, truth, and justice. They gain Jesus’ ability to see into the hearts of others and to address their deepest heart needs.
It is a gift of God — purifying our hearts. John 3:1-3 says:
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.” So we purify ourselves through our hope in Jesus.
We also can purify ourselves through repentance: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1:9)
And additionally, we can purify ourselves through belief in the promises of God: “What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” And, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” (II Corinthians 6:16-7:1)
When we purify our hearts, we SEE God. I think another way to say this is … when we have purity of heart our eyes see spiritually much more clearly and we see God’s work and his hand much more often, almost daily and weekly. And we don’t have to manufacture “God stories” where everything is over-spiritualized; we won’t need to. Because the stories of God using us are undeniable!
Lord, thank you for telling me in your Word how to purify my heart. Help me to trust in your promises and hope in the future glory of a wonderful home with you. When I sin, help me to repent and get back up and actively keep serving you.
