Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

We rely on people in life because God designed us to live in community. Our parents are the primary people we rely on as kids. I asked my dad for all kinds of things as a kid. He didn’t give me all of them, but when he did give me gifts, he always tried to give me good ones.

I think the point here is that we need to recognize that God is a thousand times more good and powerful and faithful than our earthly fathers. He plans for our good and to give us good gifts just like a good father on this earth, but much more so. So we should ask with confidence for the good gifts of God. Don’t hesitate to trust him. He loves us and wants us to be blessed all the time.

Do loved ones pass? Yes. Does extreme hardship come at times? Yes again. Does God’s massive and expansive love for us last forever? Definitely. We have a “take it to the bank”-type confidence in the faithfulness of our Almighty God to give us good gifts every time we ask him!

Lord, thank you for showering me with your good gifts throughout my life. They are so good; at times I don’t even realize how great they are! I believe in your goodness! I believe in your promises! I believe you will come through for me in the right ways AT JUST THE RIGHT TIME!
