A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous seek refuge in God.

I love the Proverbs and sometimes when life disappoints or the passion for something fades, their simple truths are a quick and comforting source of confidence. Here we find some universal truths we can count on. 1) Peace in our hearts brings health to our bodies. The peace referred to here is peace with God our maker. When I know that his plans for me are good and I am following in his ways, I can have peace. 2) Kindness to the poor, though not always recognized by those around us as a good investment, honors God. And finally, 3) when the trials of life come, if we are righteous and seek after and follow God, we have a refuge in him. There is not a storm in this life that can or will destroy us.

Many in this world are envious of others and take advantage of the poor. And in the times of calamity, they are humbled. I know we are in an economic recession right now and hear about shortages of food, oil, jobs, etc. Maybe during this economic recession, we can have a spiritual aggressive growth session. That is what I am seeking — Jesus Christ (God) in me, the hope of glory (Eph. 1:12)!
