I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus.
Paul starts his letter, not with the most pressing thing on his mind, but with a focus on what he can be thankful for in his relationship with Philemon. He is thankful for Philemon’s love for everyone in the church. This is a love that does not discriminate between races or status. Philemon takes his leadership position seriously and is active in his love for the saints.
As well, Paul is thankful for his faith in Jesus. He sounds like a faithful minister of the gospel. Faith here is not referencing a heady thought. The Christians at this time were spread out and many times under persecution from, at different times, the Jews, the Romans, and the local cities they resided in. So, faith was active and required courage and perseverance.
Finally, Paul mentions that he prays for Philemon frequently. This is important, as it demonstrates his love for Philemon and models his others-focused prayer life.
Lord, thank you for Paul’s love for all those under his care. Thank you for how he demonstrates being thankful in all circumstances and starting conversations with gratefulness. May it be said of me.
