Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let Israel say: “His love endures forever.” Let the house of Aaron say: “His love endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord say: “His love endures forever.” When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? The Lord is with me; he is my helper. I look in triumph on my enemies.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you. The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you.
This is such an incredible psalm, worth a read through it all. It starts by calling us to give thanks to God, stating one main reason over and over: “His love endures forever!”
I imagine this being sung with the leader saying, “Let the house of Aaron say”, and the congregation saying, “His love endures forever!”
Then the leader says: “Let those who fear him say”, and the congregation says: “His love endures forever!”
And the song goes on to introduce other themes:
“It is better to trust the Lord than …”
“… in the name of the Lord I cut them down.”
“… the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!”
“Blessed is the name of the Lord …”
These themes are repeated time and again here, with different proofs of them.
What do I take away from this awesome psalm? I am incredibly blessed to be called a child of God. And I can be so grateful and thankful for that truth, that any season of life or hardship will not make me waiver in praising God!
This psalm also says: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.”
(vs. 22-23)
It foreshadows the coming of Jesus Christ to earth, our Rock and Cornerstone. And it demonstrates that rejection for righteousness is a badge of honor in your kingdom!
Lord, thank you for this encouragement today. I am going to fuel my interactions with this spiritual food and energy!
