I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
As I sit here at my cousin’s cabin in the mountains, I see the beauty of these majestic peaks. I feel the joy and fulfillment of being out in nature in a beautiful spot and having everything provided for so graciously. There is wonder and an imposing awe around mountains that shows me part of the Creator’s characteristics, as well.
Help comes from God. Mountains are typically physically closer to God’s heavenly palace than anything else. So it is not strange to me that they bring a sense of closeness to God. They also make me slow down, take a break and think about: 1) All I am truly thankful for, 2) The things that matter in life, and 3) How blessed I am, even with challenges.
One theme I see in this Psalm is that God is an Overwatcher. He watches over me individually, and also over my nation. He watches over my coming and my going. He sees my every step and helps maks sure my foot does not slip. He provides me shade and rest.
I feel like this vacation is a place of great rest for me and my family. A break from the busyness of life. And a place to leave the responsibilities back home and have fun.
God is the God of rest, help, and shade, and he also knows what we need. He is the Great Overwatcher!
Praise you, Lord. Thank you for putting the thought in my cousin’s mind to bless us in such a great way! Bless him and his wife as well! And thank you for the mountains that remind me of your majesty and your awesomeness! You, who control all things … zero in to care about my life, my next step. Truly unfathomable!
