Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. Lord, give victory to the king! Answer us when we call!
There are a few different kinds of knowledge: head knowledge, knowing someone as an acquaintance or friend, and then there is to know someone or something intimately.
One of my friends was a harbor pilot in the San Francisco Bay Area. He studied these bodies of water and knew their depths and courseways at a level I could never dream of.
Wine connoisseurs know their wines by not only the name, but the vintage year and the taste.
And a husband knows his wife intimately in a way no one else can know her.
When David the Psalmist says: “This I know,” it is intimate experiential knowledge. He knows at a deep level because he has seen and experienced these things:
1) God gives victory to his anointed. Back in David’s day, this was the king, anointed with oil. Today, God’s anointed are his true followers who are bond servants for him. They are anointed with the Holy Spirit, like oil.
2) He answers injustice with his righteous right hand. He makes wrongs right. He merits out a right judgment.
3) When you trust in God, he will raise you up in due time and give you a firm place to stand.
4) God answers when his children call!
What is it that I know at a deep level, beyond a shadow of a doubt?
Lord, I desire to know you intimately and deeply. I want to know what brings you joy and fulfillment, honor and glory. And I want to know what pains your heart, what gives you cause for righteous anger, and what moves you. To know God — this is a noble pursuit.
